In 2018, students of my Modern Design course at Hunter College, CUNY partnered with NYC’s Town + Gown to study “street furniture” in public plazas. Our primary focus was Times Square. We visited Times Square as ethnographers, studying the design of outdoor seating and pedestrian activities. We met with Victoria Milne, who spoke about her firm’s construction of seating for Times Square. Then we visited Snøhetta where Nick Koster explained how the architecture firm redesigned seating and pathways to enhance safety, cleanliness and community. Lastly, two representatives from NYC’s Department of Transportation spoke to us about the collaborative public-private process of redesigning Times Square. Students then completed independent case studies on public plazas in their neighborhood.
Each week for eight months my Christie’s Education masters' students examined art on site: we visited modern and contemporary art galleries, museums, and artists’ studios in New York City. We saw bronze casting at the Modern Art Foundry, met Adam Pendleton at his Brooklyn studio, and looked at Archipenko sculpture at the Ukrainian Institute. At the end of the semester, students curated virtual exhibitions on Artsteps.
As Gallery Director at WCC, SUNY, I designed a credit-bearing “engagement coordinator” internship for students in the Art & Design Department. Engagement coordinators greeted gallery goers, designed and led tours, and created social media content.
